With
7554 acres of water, the towns of Sayner
and Star Lake are located in the headwaters
of two drainage basins - the Manitowish
River basin flowing to the west and the
Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south.
Several smaller streams are managed for
trout, with Plum Creek receiving the most
attention by trout anglers.
Vilas
County has over 1300 lakes. There are about
50 named, 95 unnamed lakes, and 31 boat
landings in the town of Plum Lake. You'll
find fishing for trophy muskies and bass,
walleye, trout, northern crappies, perch,
and blue gills. There are 47,000 acres of
public property or water in the township,
that is about 76%.
Fishing
in the Star Lake area has been an experience
of a lifetime for many. For those of you
that haven't fished here, we invite you
to come spend some time with us. The Star
Lake area holds something for every fisherman.
The largest lake in the area is Star Lake
(1250 acres) this is a lake you may want
to try for record setting muskies. Close
by is a three-lake chain consisting of Irving,
Ballard, and White Birch. This chain has
everything from crappie, blue gill, perch,
walleye, northern pike and musky. Very few
fishermen go home empty handed because of
the abundance of fish found there.
We
also have a 5 lake experimental project
in the area, which offers year-round fishing.
You mat want to experience the thrill of
fishing walleyes in April when they are
in the pre spawn stage. Many fishermen and
guides use these lakes to limber up their
arms and test their equipment for the upcoming
season. The D.N.R. personnel who man the
ranger station at Escanaba Lake are always
willing to share their expertise and give
you tips on how to fish this 5 lake project.
If
this is not enough the Star Lake area offers
many smaller lakes. Some of these include
Partridge, Dorothy Dune, Alva, Salisch,
Lone Tree, Lost Canoe to mention only a
few. Some of these lakes are hard to access,
but boat rentals on these and other lakes
are available at Errington's Rentals. Errington's
also have 14' fishing boats on trailers
for your convenience.
If
you need help in your fishing experience,
there are 4 guides who live in the Star
Lake area. These include the world famous
musky guide Tony Rizzo, Mike Errington,
Chuck Altimore and Bruce Wilsie. All of
these are very capable of showing you a
great day on the lake. Don't hesitate to
hire one of these special people to make
your day of fishing complete. By hiring
a guide who lives in the area, you will
spend more time on the lake and less time
traveling in your car. Guides from outside
the Star Lake area will travel a long way
to Star Lake to assure their clients will
catch fish.
If
gong it on your own is what you desire,
the personnel at the Star Lake Store and
Outfitters will supply yours needs and furnish
you with complete info on the lakes to choose
and the techniques needed to catch fish.
Just ask Gary, Rob or Jim about fishing
the Star Lake area. They will always take
time to answer any questions you may have,
and offer you a map of the area. The Star
Lake Store offers live bait, artificial
lures, gas, rods and reels, snacks, ECT
for your one stop shopping.
After
your day on the lake, you may want to share
your experiences with others. There are
three dining locations in the Star Lake
area. They are Still Waters, North Star
Lodge, and the Hill Side Inn. There you
can enjoy your favorite drink and dining
along with the many stories being told by
fishermen who also enjoyed their day on
one of the many lakes available in the Star
Lake area.
